Born in Chennai and did his schooling from Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan. His higher secondary education was from St. Bede’s Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School. Later he graduated from Cresent Engineering College, Chennai in Mechanical Engineering. After working for a few months he shifted to Binghamton University and completed MSC Industrial Engineering.

Later he became a graphic designer and wanted to join film making and later studied it from the State University of New York. The entry into Paruthiveeran made the total career change in his life. He is one of the leading charity providers along with his brother Suriya through various foundations and trusts.

He was born to the actor Sivakumar and Lakshmi and is the brother of Tamil superstar Suriya. Karthi’s wife is Ranjani Chinnaswamy whom he married in 2011 and is the brother in law of actress Jyothika. His daughter is Umayaal who currently has 7 years of age.

His major break was in Paruthiveeran movie along with Priyamani where he won Best Actor Awards. After the impressive work in 2007, his next release happened in 2010 with the brilliant movie Aayirathil Oruvan with Parthiepan. The same year had big hits in his name including Paiyaa and Naan Mahan Alla.

Since 2011 he became a regular lead actor in Tamil with Siruthai, Alex Pandian, Biriyani, Saguni etc. His role of Kaali in Madras movie bagged multiple Best Actor awards. Hit movies including Komban, Thozha, Kashmora, Kaatru Veliyidal. Karthi’s career-best movies were Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru and Kaithi which became a blockbuster.
